Fostering the Development of an Inclusive Campus Community
Through Partnerships and Strategic Campus Initiatives
The University of Arkansas Multicultural Center (MC) was established to create and maintain educational, cultural, and social programs to assist in the development and advancement of an ethnically diverse student body. The MC offers comprehensive academic and cross-cultural programs designed to promote academic excellence, respect differences, and empower students to develop success strategies for their future.
Retention and Recruiting
In an effort to educate students, faculty, and staff about the importace of diversity at the University o Arkansas, the MC collaborates with a variety of on- and off-campus constituents to support diversity initiatives in retention and recruiting. We will continue to think of creative ways to educate our students on the importance of leadership and the economic power of diversity. Because of our leadership and vision, the MC is considered an integral part of the University of Arkansas campus by strengthening the quality of diversity programs, creating new initiatives, and making a difference throughout our community.
Mentoring Programs
Connections
The Connections Mentoring Program is specifically designed to support first-year minority students as they transition to the University. The first-year minority students are paired with upper class mentors who support them through their initial year of college. While the purpose of the program is to create a social network system, it provides assistance for academic success.
Silas Hunt Scholars Mentoring Program
The Silas Hunt Scholarship Mentoring Program is a four-year mentoring program that includes a comprehensive academic support program involving monthly meetings, peer mentoring and social resources for the scholarship recipients. By providing activities focused on the development of the whole student, the Silas Hunt Scholarship Mentoring Program engages students in opportunities that will develop them socially and academically, ultimately resulting in a strong, positive experience while on campus. In this fifth year of the program there are 116 first-year recipients, nearly double the number from the previous entering class. There are over 400 Silas Hunt Scholars on campus this academic year.
Recruiting
Diversity Impact
This is a major initiative with the Office of Admissions and University Housing to host a three- day event to recruit minority students to experience campus life at the University of Arkansas. Diversity Impact is one of the largest minority recruiting events that includes two exciting days filled with opportunities to tour the University of Arkansas campus, meet with faculty, talk to current students, and learn about specific scholarships and financial aid opportunities. Diversity impact allows prospective students the perfect opportunity to learn about the numerous academic programs the University of Arkansas has to offer.

We recognize the transition from military to civilian life, along with added pressures from academic commitments, can be a difficult adjustment for some students.
